The Confraternity of Bom Jesus do Monte Marks the Anniversary of the World’s Oldest Operating Hydraulic Elevator.
Founded on March 25, 1882, through the initiative of the industrialist from Braga, Manuel Joaquim Gomes, this was the first funicular installed in the Iberian Peninsula and has maintained its original operating principle since its inauguration: the water counterbalance system. The elevator has been widely recognized as a strong example of sustainability, having received multiple awards for its environmental best practices. In 2013, it was classified as a Monument of Public Interest and, since 2019, has been part of the Sanctuary’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Nearly half a million passengers were transported throughout 2024, and—judging by the numbers from the first quarter of 2025—this trend is expected to grow even further this year.
The Confraternity of Bom Jesus do Monte has ensured all necessary maintenance and repairs, invested heavily in staff training, and strictly followed the regulations imposed by the IMT and ANSF over the years. A highlight was the safety drill conducted on January 30 of this year, which involved the Confraternity, the Sapadores Fire Brigade, Civil Protection, INEM, and GNR. Thanks to these efforts, this historical piece of equipment remains a living monument and a site of great tourist interest, with no significant accidents recorded in its 143 years of operation.
This morning, those who used our funicular had the privilege of hearing explanations and insights from Eng. Fernando Mendes, the technical director of the Bom Jesus do Monte Elevator for over thirty years. This Guided Tour, once again promoted by the Confraternity of Bom Jesus do Monte, aims to provide visitors with an in-depth understanding of how the Elevator works and to contribute to its awareness and promotion.
The Elevator operates daily from 08:55 to 12:55 and from 13:55 to 17:55 during the Winter Schedule (until March 29) and continuously from 08:55 to 19:55 during the Summer Schedule (starting March 30). Regular trips run at ’25 and ’55 minutes of every hour, with extra trips available when justified.
