«Guide to the FAUNA and FLORA of Bom Jesus do Monte» by Daniel Martins Antunes

The new book cataloging all the species (or at least the vast majority) that can be found in the vicinity of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte was launched today by the Brotherhood of Bom Jesus do Monte (CBJM) in partnership with the Municipality of Braga, the Bracara Augusta Foundation, and the University of Minho.

This initiative is the result of extensive and meticulous research, conducted under the guidance of Professor and Biologist Pedro Gomes, and aligns with CBJM’s goal of releasing, over five consecutive years, a representative product for each of the five human senses. The Chairman of CBJM’s Administrative Board—Rev. Canon Mário Martins—recalled that ‘The Fragrance of Bom Jesus do Monte’ (alluding to the sense of smell) and ‘The Sweets of Bom Jesus do Monte’ (alluding to the sense of taste) had already been launched. The ‘Guide to the FAUNA and FLORA of Bom Jesus do Monte’ thus emphasizes the sense of sight, as it will help all interested parties observe the plants and animals of the sanctuary in a more enriching and informed way.

His Excellency and Eminence the Metropolitan Archbishop of Braga—D. José Cordeiro—graced the event with his presence and praised the fact that the presentation of this work intentionally coincided with the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ on caring for our common home.
