S. Mateus
Statue and Fountain
The sources of the evangelists, all flanked by two elegant obelisks, and their images are attributed to the master André Soares.
Just to our left, we found the statue and fountain of St. Mateus, the first evangelist. Hold in your left hand a book, certainly related to the Gospel you wrote. Next to you is an angel.
A little below the statue is the Latin inscription: «LIBER GENERATIONIS JESU CHRISTI FILII DAVID, FILII ABRAHAM», translated by: «Book of the origin of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham». At the fountain an angel, symbol of that evangelist, pour water by the mouth. Angels are the intermediaries between God and the world, the messengers of the Lord word, just as are the apostles who wrote the story of Christ as Man.
