S. Pedro Chapel

S. Pedro Chapel

In front of the former chapel, and on the north side, we find St. Peter chapel, the apostle who mourns the sin of denials, ordered to be erected by some devotees at the same time as the previous one, having, at the top of the chapel-cave, following inscription from Lucas: «ET EGRESSUS FO / RAS PETRUS FLEVIT / AMARE», translated: «and going out, Peter wept bitterly».

Inside the chapel are the three denials of St. Peter to Jesus Christ (including the rooster scene), when Peter cried deeply for having denied his master, copious tears that made water on the face.

Also next to the wall of this chapel are found the arms of D. Jorge da Costa and the inscription:
«ARMAS. DA I.A CAPELLA / QUE MANDOU EDIFICAR O / SENHOR D. JORGE DA COSTA AR / CEBISPO DE BRAGA EM 1494 FORÃO / ENCONTRADAS NAS ESCAVAÇÕES / DOS ALICERCES DESTA OBRA EM / 1839 SENDO PREZIDENTE O IIL (ustrissi) MO / JOAQUIM DA MOTTA CAR / DOZO ABBADE DE MAXIMINOS».
